The place for EZN
reviews past and present
Detritus
Why the hell aren't Enuff Z'Nuff as huge as the Beatles?!? I just don't
get it. They are just as prolific and consistently turn out great rock/pop
tunes that most bands only hope they can craft once in their careers. 10
is the latest release from the Chip & Donnie machine and is in the
same vein as the rest of their vast library of songs, without sounding
repetitious. The disc starts off with the first single "There Goes My Heart"
which should be getting huge rotation on radio across the country because
it is everything that is good about the pop rock genre. Each and every
song is chock full of majorly catchy melodic hooks, fantastic vocal harmonies
and clever lyrical twists. Whether it is the happy-go-lucky sound of tunes
like "You're Heart's No Good...But I Love Your Face" and "Bang On" or the
somber minor key sounds of "Wake Up" and "Suicide," you are wrapped in
melody so thick you can't untangle yourself. Each melody is infectious
and hummable playing on in your head long after you have stopped the CD
spinning in your deck. These tunes are just timeless and would sound just
as good during any of the last few decades yet they sound modern as well
without the negative connotations that "modern" has acquired in the Rock/Hard
Rock/Metal genres during the '90s. The cover of "Jean Genie" is a great
addition here and I think I like it better than the original. Also covered
here is Cheap Trick's "Everything Works If You Let It" featuring that cue-ball
from Smashing Pumpkins Billy Corgan guesting on guitar. This is the 2000
re-mix as the song appeared on last year's PARAPHERNELIA. I've always loved
this song so having a kick-ass band like the Z'Nuff boys cover it is way
too cool. This is an enhanced CD and features the QuickTime video for "There
Goes My Heart" which is a great added bonus. The video is fun and fits
well with the song. This is a no-brainer of a purchase if you have ever
liked anything from Enuff Z'Nuff. To quote my buddy Matt the Pirate, "Buy
or Die!"
