Enuff Z'nuff isn't merely a subtle
reflection of 70s hook laden hard rock, but they ARE the 70s. What other
band can you think of that has cranked out one album per year over a full
decade? Hmmm? Remember when Ted Nugent and Foghat had something new to
chew on very 12 to 18 months? And what was so impressive, was that those
were their peak periods artistically. There is something to be said about
just doing it and not analyzing about every nook and cranny of big picture.
And Enuff Z'nuff, not to shockingly,
have also kept their artistic merits in tact through the whirlwind output.
Effortlessly, they weave a slew of poppy, yet somehow melancholy light
rockers for dreamy afternoons on album after album. Ten, like its predecessors,
gushes with Cheap Trick and Beatle based harmonies and atmospheric riffs.
Not always hard rock, but definitely rock and more respectable than many
will give them credit for. Like a little workhorse that never quits, the
band remain an underground force all there own. There is a passion and
expertise that goes into each track, whether it be the waltzy "There Goes
My Heart" or the harder edged "Fly Away." "Your Heart's No Good" represents
one of the top notch moody floaters that take us on a journey beyond the
surface, yet not punching us in the gut either. Kind of a safe sadness,
forgotten ten minutes later, but like little pill, does the trick when
it has to. It's not all frowny faced fare tough, "Bang On" busts it out
just like something you'd expect from later day Def Leppard.
Enuff Znuff remain a well deserved
treat in a world pervaded by droning guitars and forgotten hook. May there
be ten more.- Brian Coles
